Produce Day

The only down side of a food/produce co-op is that you usually have to pick it up at 7:00am–ON SATURDAY!

Other than that it’s a great deal. Today we got pears, apples, bananas, red plums, a honeydew melon, a single green and red bell pepper, four medium sized ears of corn, two bunches of celery hearts, two good handfuls of radishes, an acorn squash, a head of butter lettuce, bunch of red kale, and a brown paper lunch bag of yellow wax beans. Not too shabby!

The key now is to use it all before it goes bad ;)

Shade in the making..

So. While I think these (to be finished) will help us in the future, I fear it’s too late to most of the current crop. We still have a few tomatoes popping up here and there and a couple of small small peas that produced but not even enough for a snack.

It’s been so busy around here with work, Crystal about to start Dental Assisting, her parents coming out next week, the house being a mess, etc. that we haven’t had a chance (or the money) to be as attentive to the garden as we’d like. We’ll make a better effort. Pictures to follow…

Saturday Morning Update

Good Morning! It’s nice out right now (about 85 or so) but it’ll get hot, quickly (about 105ish!). Here’s how some of the plants are doing:

A Place for Peas and Pole Beans

Peas and Beans box

Peas and Beans box

We’ve got some space along the back wall that looks like a tree, or something, used to be there. We’ve also got some trellises that are bored and have nothing to do but look pretty. Crystal thought it would be a great place for sugar snap peas and green pole beans to grow. Sounds great! I love eating peas and beans straight off the vine, you can ask my Mom how many times she used to yell at me for that. Love you Mom! The bed, like all the ones we’ve made are treated with food-grade mineral oil or vegetable oil. Here are some pictures of the skinny bed that I built to house the plants: Read the rest of this entry »

Canadian Peat Moss and You

Just in case anyone was wondering, Canadian Peat Moss smells like crap. And when I say “crap” I don’t mean ‘bad’, or ‘not pleasant’, or ‘like dirt’.

Canadian Peat Moss

Canadian Peat Moss

I mean it smells like someone dropped a load in my garden. Now I expect this from most compost. But wow. I think we might pay a little extra and get two smaller bags instead of the one big one, since they’re from different companies.

Since we only used about 2/3 of the bag we’ve got to get back in it too, after it’s been in a bin, under the beds, in the sun for a week and change too. Not looking forward to it. WELCOME TO GARDENING!

Flowering and sprouting

Hello All! We’re starting to see some flowering and sprouting finally!

Strawberries, yum!

Strawberries, yum!

Strawberries, banana peppers, buds on the squash, etc. A couple of the spinach are getting taller but apparently they need more shade than we can have available right now. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be trying to devise a plan for something like shade cages/covers for some of the plants. Check out the pics below:

Preparing the soil

We prepared soil according to instructions in the Square Foot Gardening book. It’s reallly easy. Here’s the mix:  1/3 Peat Moss, 1/3 Vermiculite, 1/3 Compost mix. That’s it! He suggests that you mix a number of different composts together to get the best results.

Vermiculite, organic peat moss, and a few organic composts.

Herb Garden

Last weekend Daniel and I found our new favorite place, Summerwinds Nursery. We purchased several herbs and got the supplies for our raised bed.  We are planning on heading back next weekend to get the plants to start our vegetable garden.  I planted garlic chives, onion chives, flat leaf parsley, sweet basil, lemon balm, and lavendar.  Here is our herb garden after I finished planting everything:

Bountiful Baskets

Bountiful Baskets is a conventional (and organic) food co-op here in Arizona and, recently, southern Utah. You “donate” $15 by Wednesday and get a “basket” of produce (roughly a $50 value!) which consists of two smaller baskets–one fruit, one vegetable. It’s a fantastic deal and you never know what you’ll get! Read the rest of this entry »
